This is a test...

Okay families, this is a test! I am curious to see how many of you out there are reading the blog. I plan on keeping it up regardless of the number of readers. It is a fun way for me to document our class and it will be nice to be able to look back on our year. I would like to know how many people are coming here and checking it out though. So, if you are one of my parents and you read the blog, please let me know either by leaving a comment on this post or send me an e-mail (You can use the link on the right side of this page.). Hope you all are enjoying your weekend! Thanks!

Great Local Resources

I wanted to take this opportunity to share a couple of great resources I've come across. First, TPAC is putting on a performance of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other favorites. It is a puppet show and has gotten rave reviews. Tickets are only $14 each (not much more than the movies). There are also a number of "pay as you can" tickets available on the day of the performance. I hope some of you will get to take advantage of this great resource.

If you haven't already (and your child is younger than 5 years old), please sign your child up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program. Locally, it is also known as the Governor's Books from Birth program. This is such a fabulous program and, best of all, it's free! When you sign up, your child will receive a book for each month of his/her life from ages 0-5. We just got my daughters second book in the mail and they are great! They choose new and classic children's literature. The books are high quality and age-appropriate. Enjoying reading and being read to early and often is a key indicator of success later in school. This program can give your child a library of up to 60 books by the time they are 5. And, did I mention it's FREE?!?!?!?!?

Those are a few for now. As I come across other local resources, I will be sure to share them with you. If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment.

As promised...

Here are some photos! As you know, learning in the Montessori classroom is very individualized. Every child is working and learning at his or her own pace. This allows each child to be focused on the skills s/he needs at a particular moment in time. There will be times that we focus on a theme as a class (For example, I am getting ready to put out a variety of materials that teach the children about apples on the science shelf--the parts of the apple, making an apple graph, etc.) but for the most part each child's path of learning is designed specifically for them. With that being said, here are some photos from the last week of school. If you don't see a photo of your child, you will in the future--I promise :) (unless you did not give me permission on our "permission to photograph" form that went home at the beginning of the school year). Even if the photo is not of your child, this will give you an idea of the types of work taking place in our classroom environment. Enjoy!

More to come...soon!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long Labor Day weekend! With the first few weeks under our belts, we are really starting to get into a routine at school. I hope you are at home too! I am writing this post to let you know to expect some new posts soon with information about what is going on in the classroom. My mom just mailed my camera to me (I had left in it NJ on a trip home just before school started) so I will be able to take some photos of the children at work. And photos always speak more than words--especially in the Montessori classroom where so much of the work is hands-on & process driven. So....look for a post later this week with an update!
